TIN & Tax Registration1/27/2026

How do I verify my TIN?

In 2026, the process to verify your Tax Identification Number (TIN) is entirely digital. Under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) have harmonized their databases, making verification almost instantaneous.

Here is how you can verify your TIN right now:

1. For Companies (Using RC or BN Number)

If you are a business owner, you can verify your TIN using your Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration details:

  • Step 1: Visit the official NRS TIN Verification Portal or the Nigerian Tax ID Portal.
  • Step 2: In the "Search Criteria" dropdown, select RC / BN Number.
  • Step 3: Enter your registration number (e.g., RC1234567 or BN123456). Do not include spaces.
  • Step 4: Click Search. The system will display your Company Name, TIN, and the Tax Office where you are registered.

2. For Individuals (Using NIN or BVN)

As of January 1, 2026, your TIN is officially linked to your National Identification Number (NIN).

  • Step 1: Go to the JTB/NRS Tax ID Retrieval Portal.
  • Step 2: Select Individual as the entity type.
  • Step 3: Select NIN (National Identification Number) as your search criteria.
  • Step 4: Enter your 11-digit NIN and your Date of Birth.
  • Step 5: Click Retrieve Tax ID. If a TIN has been generated for you (which is common if you have a bank account), it will appear on the screen.

3. Verification via USSD (Mobile Phone)

If you don't have internet access, you can verify if a TIN is linked to your identity via your mobile phone:

  • Dial: *346# (This is the universal NIN retrieval code).
  • Follow the prompts: Once you retrieve your NIN, the system in 2026 often allows a secondary prompt to "Check Tax Status" or you can use your NIN directly on the web portals above.
